The IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)

… are the definitive standards for the electrical industry which everyone must follow when carrying out any domestic or commercial electrical installation work.

They set requirements and operating criteria for the UK and correspond to EC standards in respect of safe use and operation of electrical equipment and systems.

In July 2018, the previous 17th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations were updated to the new 18th Edition, and there have been several updates and amendments since then. Now, every installation from Oct 2026 needs to be designed to comply with the new latest Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671:2018 (2382-26).

… leads to a qualification officially known as the Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671:2018 (2382-26).

The 18th Edition course is an essential electrical qualification, suitable for both newcomers to the industry, associate trades and those looking to update their existing qualification. It is also a requirement for anyone interested in joining a competent person part p scheme provider – like NICEIC – and to certify that their installations meet current regulation guidelines.

As with the previous course there are 8 units to study, 7 related to the parts and 1 to the appendices of the BS 7671 IET regulations – and a 2 hour open book exam at the end.

18th Edition Amendment 4 – April 2026

Amendment 4:2024 to BS 7176:2018 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations was published on 15th April 2026, and introduces new elements which focus on smart buildings, green energy infrastructure, and heightened data safety.

Learners will be able to sit either the current online test (2382‑22) or the new version (2382‑26) between April 2026 and 15 October 2026. From 16 October 2026, the 2382‑26 online test will become the only available option.

Key Updates in Amendment 4 are:

  • A new chapter on stationary secondary batteries( storage systems). (Chapter 57)
  • New requirements for functional earthing/bonding for ICT systems. (Section 545)
  • A new section on Power over Ethernet (PoE). (Section 716)
  • Revisions to Medical Locations. (Section 710).
